Driver Deceased After Crash With Dump Truck On Spaulding Turnpike
Troop A
DOVER, N.H. – A Massachusetts man has died following a crash involving a dump truck in Dover.
At 8:02 a.m. today, Thursday, March 13, 2025, State Troopers assigned to the Troop A barracks responded to a report of an automatic crash-detection notification from a cell phone on the Spaulding Turnpike, just north of Exit 8 West, in Dover. Additional 911 calls reported a crash between an SUV and a dump truck.
The preliminary investigation determined that a 2024 Western Star dump truck, driven by Jamie L. Joy, 55, of Pittsfield, had been stopped in the right lane of the highway due to traffic congestion when it was struck from behind by a 2016 Lincoln Navigator driven by James L. Stammers, 39, of Lynn, Massachusetts.
Stammers died from his injuries on the scene. Joy was not hurt. There were no passengers in either of the vehicles.
During the investigation and cleanup of the crash, all northbound lanes of the Spaulding Turnpike were closed, and traffic was diverted off Exit 8 West for approximately three and a half hours. The scene was ultimately cleared and all lanes of travel were reopened at 11:36 a.m.
Due to the severity of the crash, members of the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit and the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Unit responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. Troopers were also assisted by members of the Dover Police Department, Dover Fire and Rescue, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
All aspects of the crash remain under investigation. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact Trooper Alison Baumbach at Alison.J.Baumbach@DOS.NH.GOV.
