Initial News Release – April 27, 2025

CANTERBURY, N.H. – One person is in critical condition following a serious crash on Interstate 93.

At 5:20 p.m. today, Sunday, April 27, 2025, State Troopers assigned to the Troop D barracks responded to a report that a dump truck went off the left side of I-93 South, near mile marker 47.4 in Canterbury, before colliding with a tree. When Troopers arrived, they joined a group of good Samaritans trying to help the driver of the dump truck, but soon determined the driver was trapped as a result of severe damage to the truck.

The driver and sole occupant, an adult male, was eventually freed by firefighters and transported by ambulance to Concord Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries and is currently listed in critical condition. At this time, the name of the driver is being withheld pending the ongoing investigation and notification of family members.

During the preliminary investigation, Troopers determined that the dump truck, a white 1996 International 4700 that was towing an industrial woodchipper, was headed southbound in the travel lane when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the truck crossed into the high-speed lane before going off the left side of the road and striking multiple trees in the median.

As of 10 p.m., the passing lane remained closed in the area of the crash while crews worked to clear debris and remove the dump truck from the median. Troopers were assisted at the scene by members of the Canterbury Fire & Rescue, Tilton-Northfield Fire Department, and Penacook Rescue Squad.

All aspects of the crash remain under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact Trooper Tyler Griffin at Tyler.L.Griffin@DOS.NH.GOV.
