UPDATE: Victim Of Route 28 Deadly Crash Identified; Dump Truck Driver Charged With DWI

The driver who died as a result of yesterday’s crash on Route 28 in Ossipee has been identified as Dorothy Marshall, 80, of Ossipee.
On Friday, May 16, 2025, officers with the Ossipee Police Department responded to a reported crash on Route 28. Their preliminary investigation determined that a 2005 Mack dump truck, driven by Robert Gifford, 54, of Rochester, collided with a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, which was being driven by Marshall.
Due to the severity of the crash, the Ossipee Police Department requested assistance from the State Police. Troopers assigned to the Troop E and Troop G barracks, as well as the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit, responded to assist with the investigation.
The subsequent investigation determined that Gifford was traveling northbound on Route 28 when he lost control of the dump truck. The truck rolled over and struck Marshall, who was traveling in the opposite direction in her SUV. Gifford was not injured, while Marshall was pronounced deceased as a result of injuries suffered in the crash.
Gifford was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated. He is being held on bail at the Carroll County Department of Corrections pending an arraignment scheduled for Monday, May 19, 2025.
Route 28 was closed for approximately seven and a half hours while Troopers conducted their investigation and emergency personnel worked to remove the involved vehicles and associated debris. Troopers were assisted at the scene by members of the Ossipee Police Department, Ossipee Corner Fire and Rescue, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Wolfeboro Police Department. Initial News Release - 4:31 p.m., Friday, May 16, 2025
OSSIPEE, N.H. – One person has died after a crash involving a dump truck in Ossipee. Route 28 is closed in the area of the crash, and the investigation continues.
At 11:47 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025, the State Police dispatch received a report of a crash between a commercial dump truck and a small crossover SUV on Route 28 in Ossipee. State Troopers assigned to the Troop G barracks, Troop E barracks, and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (CAR) Unit responded.
For reasons that remain under investigation, the driver of the dump truck struck the small crossover SUV. The dump truck overturned and spilled its contents on the road.
The driver of the small crossover SUV died as a result of the crash. Their identity is being withheld at this time pending next of kin notification.
All aspects of the crash remain under investigation.
Traffic is being diverted at Routes 28 and 171 to a detour over Route 171 to Pork Hill Road, which connects back to Route 28 in North Wolfeboro. Traffic in the area of the crash is anticipated to be impacted for multiple hours while the investigation continues.
Troopers were assisted on the scene by the Ossipee Police Department, the Ossipee Corner Fire and Rescue, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wolfeboro Police Department.
