Initial News Release

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – A 65-year-old California woman has died after a crash during the morning commute.

Shortly before 8 a.m. today, the New Hampshire State Police was notified of a crash along Interstate 95 in the City of Portsmouth. Troopers assigned to the Troop A barracks responded to the scene, which was just south of exit 3B, and found a car on its roof in the high-speed breakdown lane of the southbound lanes of travel.

Evidence at the scene indicated that the involved vehicle, a 2019 Genesis G70, had been traveling northbound toward Portsmouth.  For reasons still under investigation, the driver, a 38-year-old man from Saugus, MA, lost control and left the paved portion of the interstate.  The car continued into the grassy center median, before turning and hitting a large light pole. The only passenger in the vehicle, a 65-year-old woman from Buena Park, CA, was thrown from the car and pronounced dead on scene.  The driver was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Names of the driver and passenger are not being released at this time.

Two southbound lanes of I-95 were closed for approximately three hours while emergency responders investigated the crash.  Members of Troop A were assisted on scene by Troopers assigned to the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Unit, the Greenland Police Department, Greenland Fire Department, Portsmouth Fire Department, North Hampton Fire Department, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, New Hampshire Department of Transportation and National Wrecker Service.

All aspects of the crash remain under investigation.  Anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash, and has not already spoken to investigators, is encouraged to contact Trooper Tyler Dodds at Tyler.M.Dodds@dos.nh.gov.
